Valeriia Shubina is a contemporary Russian writer living in Moscow who has written numerous short stories, essays and articles about life in the Soviet Union and Russia.

Here you can read several essays in Russian written by Valeriia Shubina. The first selection, "On the Spot Where the Ground Was Sticky" is a requiem in honor of the victims of the October 1993 armed confrontation in the center of Moscow between Communists in the Russian parliament and pro-Democracy executive branch. "A Yankee-Russian Dandy," a story about an American student's sojourn in Moscow, follows.
